Dinner Rolls

I stumbled upon this recipe a few years ago and they were a hit! It's now my go-to recipe! Get creative in adding in spices - I have added sugar on top and rosemary on top (seperately) before.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 package Active Dry Yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 31/4 - 3 3/4 cups flour
  • 3/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  • In a large bowl (or KitchenAid Mixer), stir 1 1/4 cup of flour and 1 package of active dry yeast together.
  • In a medium saucepan, stir together: 1 cup of milk, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/3 cup of butter, 3/4 tsp of salt until butter is almost melted.
  • Add to flour/yeast mixture along with 1 egg.
  • Beat on low for 30 seconds, scraping the bowl consistently.
  • Beat on high for 3 minutes.
  • Using a wooden spoon, stir in the remaining flour (2 cups)
  • Place the dough on a lightly floured surface.
  • Knead in enough flour to make a moderately stiff dough that is smooth and elastic. (add in flour a spoonful at a time).
  • Shape dough into a ball.
  • Lightly grease a large bowl. Place the dough inside and turn once. Cover with a dish towel.
  • Let rise in a warm place until double (about 1 hour).
  • Place dough on a lightly floured surface. Divide dough in half.
  • Cover with a dish towel. Let rest for 10 minutes.
  • Grease baking sheet.
  • Preheat oven to 400°
  • Shape dough into 20 balls. Place on baking sheet.
  • Cover with a dishtowel. Let rise in a warm place until nearly double (about 30 minutes)
  • Bake for 15-18 minutes.
  • Immediately remove from baking sheet and cool on wire racks.

Notes

I have not tried this recipe with alternative kinds of milk or flour - I use unbleached flour, whole milk, and cane sugar.
